Poles have split into four distinct categories as the sport has grown. Understanding the differences before you buy saves you money and saves your race. The wrong pole at mile 70 is a liability, not an asset.

How to Choose

For racing: Z-fold carbon, under 250g per pair, cork or foam grip with extended lower section. For training: adjustable folding carbon — you can dial length for different terrain and share with partners. For beginners: aluminum adjustable to learn technique without the investment. For 100-milers: prioritize packed length — it must fit your vest quiver. Measure your quiver before you buy.

Pole length formula: stand upright, hold the pole with your elbow at 90 degrees — your forearm should be parallel to the ground. Most runners go 5–10cm shorter than hiking length for uphill efficiency. On steep descents, lengthen them if your poles are adjustable.
